An old stone wall does gather some moss ...

An old stone wall does gather some moss ...
HFF !! ...

Near historic Boonsboro Maryland (A significant part of this village is owned by author Nora Roberts.) Somehow this 50meters of old stone fence has escaped the ravages of farm modernization and road widening projects.

Andy Rodker, Percy Schramm, ColRam, Xata and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

Fortunately, the fence escaped. It really would have been a pity.
HFF and a great weekend to you.

A little late but HFF to you too, Wally! I read somewhere (Bill Bryson, probably) that much of the Appalachians now known for forest, was once farmland with drystone walls such as you see in Britain.

In Wintertime, with the leaves off the trees, driving on the interstate highways, one can see a lattice-work of stone walls running through now what is totally mature forest. Some of the stone walls are on steep slopes; I think they must have been to keep domestic animals contained, rather than keeping wildlife (deer) from eating crops as on flatter land. Some places, the ground is so rocky, that to cultivate it, pioneer farmers simply had to move the rocks out ... so they just built walls with them.

Great textures here. Interesting information, - I didn't know that about Nora Roberts. It sounds as if Nora and her husband have worked really hard to help the town to grow and prosper. HFF and have a good week ahead
