A fence over the walkway at.. 'Dale dyke' dam ..building the original dam began in 1859 and nearly completed by 1864 - during a stormy evening on the 11th.March 1864 cracks appeared in the embankment of the dam and then suddenly a gap of 30 metres appeared and almost 3.178 billion litres of water swept down the valley resulting in the deaths of more than 250 people and destroying forges - mills - houses and bridges. The event became known as 'The great Sheffield flood''
