''World photography day''... Bolsover castle' .. North East Derbyshire - UK.

''World photography day''... Bolsover castle' .. North East Derbyshire - UK.
For the ''World photography day'' - here is 'Bolsover castle' - the now ruined buildings seen to the right are open to the elements.. The 'Little Castle' seen centre was created as an extravagant retreat by playboy, poet and courtier, Sir William Cavendish. With medieval-style turrets and towers it was a building designed to surprise and delight, a castle built for living - rather than defence.

Even royalty came here, in 1634, when Sir William spent a staggering £15,000 on banquets and entertainment for King Charles I, and his Queen Henrietta Maria.

Now preserved and beautifully restored, the labyrinth of sumptuous rooms with richly coloured wall art, carved marble fireplaces and stunning over 300 year old painted ceilings.

Nouchetdu38, Annalia S., Nick Weall, Peter_Private_Box and 30 other people have particularly liked this photo

Strangely I walked past the end of Bolsover Road, Eastbourne on my way back from Beachy Head today.
Many nobles were nearly (or really) bankrupted by entertaining royalty, who might stay many days, even weeks, with large entourages who needed food and wine as well.

That's correct Phil.. the visitors were a huge expense on the hosts - and as you write, all the food and wine that was consumed too.. no W.Cs back then, so then some poor devils had to empty the ''slops'' probably tonnes of it !!...... Cheers for comment .. keep well - from > David J.

Sumptuous! I love these old castles, half in ruins, half in good condition. If these walls could tell their story....

Thanks Christa'.. yes hundreds of years of living in and around the castle would make very interesting stories indeed.. among other things too - it seems that 'Swan' was on the menu

An impressive looking place...............I like the idea of having half the place in ruins as a sort of "before and after" comparison.

Very nicely composed with a lovely leading line from the path. The detail you've captured is excellent.

Enjoy the rest of your day................and have a lovely weekend David.

Nice to see something distincly English for World Photography Day. Castles have always fascincated me. Love reading about this one - especially that it was more for living than protecting. You've done such a good job getting the whole thing into your photo. Were there other people around? Do you come here often? It seems oddly peaceful.

Did you choose this because you love coming here?
David G Johnson club has replied to raingirl club
Thanks Laura'.. for your post here,. which I seem to have missed,. and others too'.. the castle is a part of 'English Heritage' visitor network,. of which we are members,.we can visit regularly ,. and do too,. with the Grandchildren as it's fun to explore,.. Good wishes to you, from David J.

I now know more about the "English Heritage" network as we were in England last summer and toured a couple places on the network. It's great you get to go to this one often and how wonderful to get to take grandchildren (I'm a new grandparent as of this year, so still too little for adventures to castles, but soon enough! *smile*)

Glad you noticed people's comments for before. It's never too late to reply in my book! (It is hard to keep up with everything here on ipernity, there are so many different ways to view and explore our website. I often fail to check my News page "Your space" option where one finds these comments. Luckily that page goes back about a month, but after that one has to search one's own photos.)
