The Monsal trail.. old railway from Buxton to Manchester

The Monsal trail.. old railway from Buxton to Manchester
An inside shot..of the longest of 8 tunnels of the popular 'Monsal trail' along the 'Wye valley' - Derbyshire. During the days of regular use - twin rail tracks ran here and the shallow openings within each side - are refuges where any workers could take shelter from the rumbling fire breathing iron monsters as they hurtled along. A varied assortment of brickwork lines the tunnels and it is fascinating to think back to the times of the 1860s and the skills of the tunnellers when this rail line was constructed through this beautiful valley.

Here is an extract from 'John Ruskin' (8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) who was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era and was bitterly opposed to the building of this railway.

''Among the pinnacles of its crags you cared neither for gods nor grass, but for cash (which you did not know the way to get). You thought you could get it by 'Railroad Enterprise'. You enterprised a railroad through the valley, you blasted its rocks away, heaped thousands of tons of shale into its lovely stream. The valley is gone, and the gods with it; and now, every fool in Buxton can be at Bakewell in half-an-hour, and every fool in Bakewell at Buxton; which you think a lucrative process of exchange.. you Fools everywhere''

Hi David

Superb colours in this 'night time' capture, especially the different textures in the bricks.

Even today we have the 'not in my back yard' brigade who oppose every transport development going! One day the government might just take an upper hand, and develop an integrated transport strategy, to be imposed for the good of the country!

Best Wishes, and a good weekend
Peter

PS, sorry for lack of visits recently, I've been away!

Excellent. That's what I wanted to see: the inside of the tunnel. I see that it is well lit... so that you can spot the miscreants that might hide in the shallow openings :)
Very nice shot.

How do you feel in there? I found it a little bit unsettling even when so well lit. it was very quiet when I walked through and then seeing cyclists coming towards me (again with little sound until they got near )seemed very strange.

Gotcha'.. Colin.. I know what you mean... I was alone on this occasion - my walking pal was away.. I usually feel safe but that's until the day someone bashes my head with a rock and nicks my stuff...and yes a few almost silent cyclists hurtled past me with no warning. Also - amazingly a few lone young girl joggers in there too...... they gave me a wide swerve !!

Gotcha'.. thanks Keith...as you might know,, it's a lovely trail through derbyshire's valley's but I found it can be lengthy and tiring by foot - exit points are not very regular so one has to keep going,,..better by bike if possible - or horse - but I don't have a horse.. !
I'll write to Santa'..... Cheers for taking a look see'... Best wishes from > Dj.
