An enormous new distribution centre for Lidl is being built right now.

History:~

25/01/2018
Lidl UK have announced that they plan to open their new distribution centre in Houghton Regis, Central Bedfordshire, following the sale agreed with the Houghton Regis Management Company.
The new distribution centre will be the largest of Lidl's warehouses in the UK, based on a 58 acres (23-hectare) site adjacent to Junc 11a of the M1.
This is the first deal to be announced from the North of Houghton Regis development site.
Central Bedfordshire Council have been instrumental in facilitating this opportunity which follows extensive investment in the area to complete both the A5-M1 link road and Woodside Link, which connect to the new M1 junction.
Jason Longhurst, Director of Regeneration and Business at Central Bedfordshire Council said, “The site has outline permission for a mixed-use development at North Houghton Regis, including warehousing, alongside the new junction 11a of the M1.
Lidl’s interest in coming to the Houghton Regis business park is great news for the local community. It demonstrates how our commitment to building roads and infrastructure can lead to local jobs.
The council helped fund both the Woodside Link and A5-M1 link roads, which opened last summer and connect the business parks to the new M1 junction. Since construction of the roads started, more than 50 new deals have been completed for industrial and distribution units across Dunstable, Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard, and the investment generated or planned for the area is already worth an estimated £2bn.
We look forward to bringing yet more companies and jobs to the area

Nothing like joined up thinking and forward planning.
We are struggling in a small way at the moment. There has been a water leak outside somewhere near the water meter. So for the last 48 hours we have had no running water. Severn Trent water board has been out and given us 10 large bottles of drinking water. Meanwhile we've had to dig up a small area of the garden. They're supposed to be coming out again today ..... I can't wait to flush the loos. ;-))))

Sounds grim I hope that they are able to fix the problem today otherwise you'll need to hire a portaloo before you meet your waterloo :~)

Hi Steve, yes it is enormous and I have watched as they decontaminated the land and did all of the groundwork. The steel has only been going up since this Spring so it is impressive.

The beans and wine will have to wait a while yet though :~)

Thanks for your kind wishes.

I hope that you enjoy a good weekend too

All the best

Hi dear GGR. It is a very important development for the area and will generate many new jobs and opportunities.

The new motorway junction that was built to service this has been of benefit to our factory as junctions 11 and 11a give two ways to get onto the M1 within ten minutes of our location, whilst junctions 9, 10 & 12 are also options in times of accidents etc.

Thanks for your kind visit and have a good weekend.

Warm wishes

Hi Nick
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
Be interesting to see where the lorry drivers come from.. (As Rosa says)
Also worth noting that this is just the right distance from the channel ports to align with the drivers tacho breaks .. So we can watch for asylum seekers escape attempts too!
Great colours
Best Wishes, HFF, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!

Hi Peter

Over the years I've seen a few lorries on the hard shoulder near J11 with police cars all around and refugees pouring out of the trailers and trying to run off. I guess that they have friends or relatives in or around Luton. Of course Toddington Services is not far away for a safer decamp.

Thanks for your good wishes ~ Hanwe

Hi Nick, these things are always quite amazing to watch go up. One moment there is nothing the other we have these giant structures. I always have mixed feelings about big warehouse projects, in a way blotting the landscape but I use Lidl too and they must have there warehouses somewhere. More pollution and noise nearby but I imagine not too many scholls or houses on the doorstep here. As you say, councils are always more than happy to receive extra income and jobs for the locals.

Keep safe, Herb
