The barbican gate and outer defences of the castle viewed from the curtain wall.

The barbican gate tower and bridge were built by Henry III between 1243 and 1245, although the first reference of an earlier barbican occurs in 1175. This surviving stretch of the curtain wall was built by King John between 1202 and 1212, presumably replacing an earlier line of defence.

Thanks so much for your visit and kind words Rosa. The walled part of the castle itself seems to have covered about 5-6 acres of the 15 acres of the headland. Hopefully the bugs causing these problems on IP will be eradicated soonest!

Lovely perspective - the views are beautiful Doug. Well captured. I too have had problems for the last two days. I gave up on it yesterday and almost did tonight. Still slow but at least photos are opening eventually. Have a good evening.
