These *almshouses, a grade II listed building, were built in in 1836. They were originally known as the Mariners Asylum.

The charity provides almshouses for poor aged persons of good character being shipowners (having been nautical people), shipmates, mates, seagoing carpenters or mariners and their wives or widows or unmarried daughters being not less than 50 years of age who have resided in the Borough of Scarborough for not less than ten years.
