The view of the imposing Lenin statue in the Schwerin district of Grosser Dreesch looks like a postcard from a bygone era. With his hands in his coat pockets and his bold gaze, the communist idol stands amidst a monotonous landscape of prefabricated buildings and long, parallel streets.

This Lenin figure is the cause of heated debates between politicians, citizens, and historians, who, divided into supporters and opponents of the statue, repeatedly argue about its future. The range of proposals regarding how to deal with the sculpture by Estonian sculptor Jaak Soans, inaugurated on June 22, 1985, is diverse and ranges from immediate demolition to renovation.

The Schwerin city council stated that the Lenin statue should be respected and preserved as a memorial and a work of art.
