Sierra de La Cabrera, Madrid Province. Maybe I should have cropped this a lot more.

La Sierra de La Cabrera is really an isolated outpost of the Sierra de Guadarrama. As such, it truly was an island in the fog. In the far distance is the snow capped peak of Penalara, the highest mountain in the sierra de Guadarrama.

A famous sea-cliff climbing Mecca. I came here many times in the late 70s and early 80s to climb (the climbing routes are far more extensive than can be seen here, they extend round the corner and far down to sea level). Now I prefer just to walk and scramble! A sea mist ('fret' in Cornish) was just coming in. Best on full screen!

Needs the highest of suns on a June day and a searingly hot temperature to open fully.

There are many old towns, surprisingly close to Madrid, that are comparatively tourist-free such as Colmenar de Oreja.

It was fun climbing through the fog not knowing if I would emerge from under it! Fortunately I did. And fortunately by this time I was familiar enough with the paths not to be worried about going astray in the mirk!

Sorry, I just realised I also posted this a couple of months ago!

It's easy to get down to this point but from the top it looks impossible, Great to see astonished walkers on the coast path looking very concerned at the danger. I normally pass them about 20 minutes later and with a cheery hello, then quickly descend to Tubby's Head which leaves them even more astonished. All paths are very easy and safe; they just don't look it from above!

Bunuel made an important film about Las Hurdes, highlighting the extreme poverty of the area for much of the 20th century.

Very touristy but still unspoilt, La Alberca is one of the very beautiful villages situated in the Sierra de Francia, Salamanca Province.

A granite fairyland. And only a few miles outside Madrid. How it is not swarming with weekend walkers, bikers, etc is beyond me. But perhaps because this is the quieter eastern end and all the visitors go to the western end. Lucky for those that choose the eastern end, I say!
PLEASE VIEW FULL SCREEN for the detail in the granite rock.
The red and white waymark on the foreground rock is for the GR10, the long-distance path that crosses the centre of the Iberian peninsula from Valencia to Lisbon
