Poor lighting in the kitchen and I could have waited for daylight but someone asked me to show some of my specials wines so I post 2 photos today. It's not always easy to read the labels so here goes (a summary)
L to R: Penfolds Grange 1999 - Australia's most iconic red and a recognised 'trophy wine'. Viña Tondonia white Rioja 1981. An extraordinary wine. I once drank a glass from a bottle that had been left open after a wine tasting three months earlier and still sublime! Château Pouilly, Pouilly Fuissé, 2009. Maybe too old but hope not and will open it soon. UPDATE, HAD IT LAST NIGHT WITH TROUT AND ALMONDS - A PERFECT MATCH! Vega Sicila Unico 1990. Spain's most famous wine and another 'trophy wine'. A 1973 was one of the two greatest wines I've ever tasted (the other being a half-bottle of La Mission Haut-Brion 1963 on my 30th birthday. I've still got the empty bottle and might show it one day. Château Mouton-Rothschild 1998. I'm looking firward to my first tsting of a 1st class growth Pauillac, Bordeaux at some future date. It goes without saying that this is another so-called trophy wine! Obviously not everyday drinking!

Gabi Lombardo, Leo W, Jean Paul Capdeville, Jenny McIntyre and 6 other people have particularly liked this photo

I once tried a drop, Andy. It was very impressive, but I did find myself wondering about the relative value compared to some other quality wines. winehouse.com.au/wine-list/penfolds/penfolds-bin-389-various-vintages

You're quite right George. There is no value judgement answer here except that supply and demand and the cachet of a super-wine or a trophy wine will skew the price something rotten. The Chinese demand also queered the pitch for a long time as well (not so much now).
I acquired some of these as follows; they belonged to an old friend whose father was a bit of a collector and she had no interest whatsoever. So, when he died, she was happy for me to buy about 30 or so top wines from her for a relative song, not that I cheated her. Put it this way; we were both happy with the deal which is at should be! I was fortunate in that I had just had one of my more sucessful years, business-wise, so had the wonga at just the right time! In my eyes, that was serendipity!
And thanks too for the link. I've enjoyed the Bin 389 from time to time (well, twice actually).

Thank you, Erich!
My mum and I drank the Château Pouilly, 2009. I half expected it to be undrinkable (I've had some bad experiences with white wines from about this time, mainly burgundies and problems they had with corks, now hopefully resolved), but it had held up very well and was delicious with some turbot I poached (cooking term, not the illegal activity!) and the rest of the bottle went a treat with trout and almonds two days later.
