San Lorenzo de El Escorial

San Lorenzo de El Escorial
The nerve centre of the largest world empire up to that time - Phillip II's imposing palace / monastery.
Worth a look on large and further for the palace detail.

It's a great picture of this huge building. I recognise it from other pictures of yours. It's a monastery now isn't it?

No, but we had an invite to a wedding at the chapel there (one of my former students) but it was for last October and I was well ensconced in Cornwall by then!
Thank you, Herb!

Well, officially it's still a Royal Palace (one of many) and it was always intended as a monastery as well as a palace by its devout founder Phillip II. I don't think the current royal family use it at all.

***To everybody, thank you all for your terrific comments and awards! I think this is one of my better photos from these woods to the palace as I managed to get better clarity of the palace itself than on some other occasions.***

Always that dichotomy between artistic sensibility and realpolitik, even if separated by centuries!
