What gets lost here builds up elsewhere in silted harbours etc. A balance of sorts is achieved but we'll be far too long gone to notice it!

'Mind the gap!'
When I first heard the PA on the Madrid metro saying (I translate); 'The train is about to approach a station that is on a curve. On disembarking, please make sure that you do not position your foot between the train and the platform'.
I explain to my student that 'mind the gap' is all that is needed.
A lively discussion ensues, which is good!

It has to be fairly simple for the commuters to understand..!!
