Frank Sugg, Lancashire and England

Frank Sugg, Lancashire and England
My great grandfather's uncle. A hard-hitting batsman in the Botham / Flintoff / Pietersen / Stokes mold. (a 19th century pinch hitter!) He played in the first two test matches of Dr W G Grace's captaincy of England against the 1888 Australian tourists, which they won handsomely..

Late response, Colin!!!! Not sure I follow you. Yes, Frank was a crowd pleaser à la Botham or Flintoff or Stokes, but I get the impression he was wilder than any of them and was never really trusted by the powers that were!

He was certainly that, Colin. He also played football for Everton and was a strong swimmer, once very seriously considering being the first man to cross the English Channel. Perhaps fortunately he was beaten to it and dropped the idea!
