Buongiorno Doug, this is the swiss side of Lake Maggiore. In the background you can see the mouth of Ticino River which ends the first fluvial stretch. At the other extremity of the Lake, at Sesto Calende, in Italy, it will continue through the Pianura (plain) Padana until the beautiful town of Pavia. After a few kilometres it finally leads into the River Po, the longest river of Italy. That said you can sail (just with kayaks or small boats) from Locarno, my small town that you can see in the others pictures of this series, to the Adriatic Sea.
