Native to Mexico, this morning glory has a vibrant history. Aztec priests swallowed the sacred seeds to enter trances and speak with spirits. This deep ritual history bridged into modern times when chemist Albert Hofmann discovered the seeds contained ergine (LSA), a natural compound nearly identical to his famous discovery, the LSD. This news quickly sparked the 1960s counterculture movement. When synthetic alternatives were banned, young people seeking spiritual freedom turned to traditional plants instead. Today, this exotic vine has moved from shamanic rituals and wild counterculture circles into colourful backyard gardens. Green-fingered Brits love it as a fast-climbing ornamental star. It grows lush, heart-shaped leaves and big clusters of white, trumpet-shaped flowers with dark centres. Because it bursts into bright blooms during the winter, it brings life to garden fences and trellises when other plants fade. This spectacular winter show has earned the plant the joyful nickname "Christmaspops".
