As três irmãs Górgonas - Medusa, Esteno e Euríale, filhas das antigas - eram divindades marinhas, Fórcis (Phorkys) e sua irmã, Ceto (Keto), monstros ctônicos de um mundo arcaico. A sua genealogia é partilhada com outro grupo de irmãs, as Greias, como é explicado na obra Prometeu Acorrentado, de Ésquilo, que situa ambos os trios de irmãs num lugar longínquo, "a terrível planície de Cistene":

Oh how cool!! Jellyfish are remarkable creatures, it is truly amazing to swim with them as well, but you must be very careful about the stingers which, as you know, are basically invisible to the eye. As a scuba diver I have seen many well in the ocean. They are amazing!
