American Pika

American Pika
The American Pika, Ochotona princeps, is a small relative of the rabbit that lives in alpine boulderfields in the American west. This curious little guy was photographed along the Heather-Maple Pass trail in the North Cascades and seemed completely unafraid of us.

Ryan Brookes, , Gabriella Siglinde, xenophora and 47 other people have particularly liked this photo

did you really find him? i was just reading about them today in the gorge - but i have only ever seen a sculpture of one at the zoo. so cool that they are related to the rabbit.

did it make it's sound for you?

great photo!

We heard him before we saw him, but not when we were photographing him. It's probably more correct to say that he found us - came out of the rocks to watch us. Wonderful, isn't he?

I'm DYING here, Ron! You're just not allowed to post such CUTENESS!! That's it. I'm in love. How shall I ever explain this to Steve? "Honey? We need to talk...I've fallen in love with a Pika!" :D You sure did get a perfect picture. Such an adorable little guy, and how nice that it wasn't afraid of you. We found that to be the case when we were on Vancouver Island...the animal life was much less timid for some reason. Very interesting.

So I opened up this album of yours, "Native Animals", and this was the first picture. I dare not venture on or I'll never ever leave! :) I must say, it's a delight to close my eyes and click on an album to visit of yours...there will never be a bad choice! :)

I hope your day is going well. Things are starting to get a bit sideways in regards to that virus. Steve tried to get some Purell and disinfectant wipes in town ystrdy...he must have been to half a dozen stores, nary a one on a shelf. So he came up with the idea of using Huggies and pouring alcohol on them, which we read later is actually a recommended way to make your own wipes! :) I read today that there are now two cases here in our county (a couple who have a mild case)... as Medford is an artery town between SF and Portland, it's going to get thick around here for sure. We'll be at home unless we can't be but won't be going to movies or restaurants or other gatherings. Seems to me that camping wouldn't be a bad way to ride this out but we'll have to think about it...I'm going to bet there will be a lot less people around though so it seems like a great idea...unless of course we somehow managed to contract it. We both think that, as we haven't gotten sick while on keto (or if we have it presents in such a mild way we can't tell if we had something) we're crossing our fingers that we wouldn't get it anyway. Who knows though?

Reading your post to me, looks like you've been cooking up a storm! I think you're making Ethiopian dishes just to make me climb the walls! GIMMEE!!! NAO! :)

How did the car fare from its checkup? Hopefully not too pricey for the tuneup?

Once again, my deepest thanks for your over-the-top compliments about my pictures, presentation and rocks. It's all I could have hoped for and more!

Starlink: it never occurred to me that you might actually see the satellites in the sky in regards to astral photography. Hmmm, that would be annoying if they affect a picture's quality! I hope that you get some nice shots when you get to try that again!

BOY, your brothers have quite the mighty backpacking adventure planned...I don't think I'd be able to do something like that...I mean, the mileage is doable. It's the climbing that would do me in. And once again, I could do it WITHOUT a backpack but loaded down? I seriously doubt it. (After all, I'm less than 100lbs and carrying a 30Lb backpack is just so rough!!) Of course, I'd need to train for such a thing so I'd have an idea if a plan like that was too much for me or not. I have always wanted to hike to the top of Mt McLoughlin near us but Steve always throws a wrench in the works by saying we'd need to train for it (no, wouldn't have to) and of course training hikes never happen so *sigh*...I sure do admire you for the cool trips you've been on which test your mettle! :)

Holy cow, sounds like your kids attracted accidents just as much as your brothers and my brothers did! I suppose most active families are all that way. Personally, I think it's important for kids to test their limits (within reason). Overly protecting a child doesn't seem like a good way to give them confidence in their own abilities. I really don't have any say though, not being a parent myself!

Ok, I think that's it from here...Steve has keto hot dog buns in the oven for sausages in a bit, that will be wonderful!!
