Gulkana Glacier

After driving east to the end of the Denali Highway and to the ghost town of Paxson we turned north towards Fairbanks and drove to Gakona Glacier, visible near the center of the picture. We stopped at the overlook along the highway but also drove out into the open area to the west of the glacier. We had hoped to hike to the glacier from the end of the road, but the road became so rough and difficult that we finally gave it up. The flowers in the foreground are Eskimo Potato and Hairy Alpine Milk Vetch.
