Dog rose

Dog rose
Thank you for the ID, Keith! Rosa canina (dog rose, not a very elegant common name). Apparently they are bomb-proof, impervious to low temps and grow in any soil. In other words, not far from a wild rose.

According to Wikipedia, there are nine members of the "Rosa canina species complex." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_canina

That seems to be it! I photographed the hips during the winter. Google image shows some hips for dog rose as long, some fat like in my shot:
