Il s'agit d'un des trois platanes plantés sous Buffon en 1785.

Le platane d'Orient, hybridé avec le platane d'Amérique (Platanus occidentalis) introduit en Europe au XVIIe siècle, donnera le platane commun (Platanus x hispanica) couramment planté comme arbre d'ornement et d'alignement.
