Carpobrotus edulis

PLEASE CLICK ON THE PHOTO TO SEE IT BETTER

Carpobrotus edulis is native to South Africa. It is also known as Hottentot-fig,[1] ice plant, highway ice plant or pigface and in South Africa as the sour fig (suurvy; earlier: hotnotsvy), on account of its edible fruit.

On the Mediterranean coast, Carpobrotus has spread out rapidly and now parts of the coastline are completely covered by this invasive species.

Shame that something so beautiful can be so harmful.
We have a similar problem with the rhododendron.

I wasn't aware of the consequences of the spreading of this exotic plant here until I saw a documentary of French TV about the situation in nearby Corsica. The carpobrotus was planted to prevent or fight erosion along the coast but they found out that actually it increases it because it replaces the original Mediterranean bush which with their roots protect the soil. So they are spending a lot of money to eradicate it from their coasts... luckily the diffusion in Sardinia is not so large and I never saw erosion problem.

But when I searched wikipedia to copy my note here I read about another aspect which I ignored: the fruits of this plant are eaten by the rats and so rats help the plant to spread even more and the plant helps the rats to multiply and thrive... a mutual assistance!

Gorgeous scenery Skipper. Love the carpet of pink flowers in the foreground. I wonder why it is known as an ice plant. Intriguing. Very nice capture
