World Photography Day 2025

World Photography Day 2025
Our world is rapidly changing!
This, my offering for this auspicious day, is a dry look at our usually full to the brim Greenfield Reservoir in the NW of England. I am about 300 meters further down from the edge of the water, where I have taken this same view many times before, but never in my life have I seen it as low as this. With no prospect of heavy rain over the next weeks, the outlook is bleak for our farmers and wildlife in an area well known for its constant wet weather.
Ps this is our drinking water.

ps a link here to almost the same view in 2016: www.ipernity.com/doc/1081863/53051988

Scary and this will probably not get better in the future ...

Yes it is the same all over England and I know there are great problems in mainland Europe too. Well it can't be climate change -President Trump says, so it must be true.
The rest of the world has its own climate related problems too.

Well done Herb on getting the low angle. A little drizzle today or perhaps just mizzle but nothing to help so far

Looking very similar to the Crowden range that yourself have photographed in the drought. I was not very low here.

Cheers and enjoy the day. Herb

This really illustrates the dry dam very well, with the detail in your notes reinforcing the message, Herb. It certainly ties into the global climate issues.

A frightening photograph, Herb. It's supposed to be the wettest part of England, isn't it? Let's hope that by WPD 2026 you can take a photo of a semi-full reservoir.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Old Owl club
Yes you are right, this side of the Pennines is very wet indeed, only in parts of the Lake District is it wetter and of course the North West of Scotland too. I have included a look at the same spot from some years back in the last photo.

Wow that's not good at all................you wouldn't even recognise the reservoir as being the same one in your "twin" image!

We've been lucky down my part of the country...........Southern water is struggling and has a hose pipe ban in force, but after few miles away Portsmouth water says they are OK (at least for the moment).

A cleverly composed and thought provoking image and narrative.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Keith Burton club
Yes the difference that water makes is quite astounding. Funny how in your area, not know for its high rainfall should be doing almost OK when ours is at risk. As far as I know, we do not have a hosepipe ban yet. maybe the Lake District is compensating for all that.

Best Wishes. Herb

It sure is Gordon. You know yourself, from the state of reservoirs recently visited and dry canal too how this lack of rainfall is affecting us all.

Cheers. Herb

A good contribution for WPD, Herb. It is the same situation in our region, rivers, streams and ponds have lowered their water levels, it is alarming.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Christa1004 club
Yes, I know it has been very hot in France and Spain/Portugal has had water problems for a while now. You have had big fires too. Yes, all this is a worrying trend.

Best Wishes. Herb

Herb Riddle club has replied to Steve Paxton club
As you say Steve, more a picture of your own reservoirs than ours. Its not good for the future as our Earth is forecast to get warmer.

Thanks for popping by. Herb

As they are here in my own garden too. A very early Autumn is forecast and so our birds and animals will also have an emergency this Winter.

A sight that I am sure will resonate with other communities across the country and indeed the world Herb and a perfect choice for World Photography Day. An excellent capture and it has a beauty of it's own. There is such a contrast between this and the photo in your link. Some serious rain needed!

Best wishes Carol

Nice to see you here again Carol. Your words are so right inasmuch the world is in crisis and we need to take notice. Great that you liked the matching pair here. Still no sign of rain in the near future.

Take care. Herb

This is truly concerning, your photos illustrate the changes very convincingly.
I'm afraid many parts of Europe will be heading towards drought conditions and when the rain comes it will be too much in too short a time and will lead to flooding.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Gudrun club
Yes, we too, see the problems on the Continent too and as you say, when the rains do come, they will bring additional problems of flooding.

Thanks and Best Wishes. Herb

Weather changes certainly are difficult to fathom and deal with.

One doesn't usually think of England as having water issues.

It's interesting to me how some people view the world from a wide perspective and other from up close. You view of an expanse, while sad about the water, is a delightful image.

Do you most often take landscape views like this?

My local river - The South Tyne - has been desperately low for much of 2025, so I can appreciate the worry that such an empty reservoir causes.
