The wild and grand Loch Ness

The wild and grand Loch Ness
Not a monster in sight as we take a cruise on here, SW towards Urquhart Castle, shortly coming up on the right. This capture does not convey the size of the waves and turbulence on here as we bounced through the wake today. You get some idea of the weather, seeing these clouds and also some idea of the size of this very long 23 (36km) miles and 788ft (240m) deep fresh water lake. This whole valley is actually Glen Mor (known as 'The Great Glen'). It actually bisects the Highlands and forms part of the system of waterways across Scotland that civil engineer Thomas Telford linked by means of the Caledonian Canal (opened 1822).
nb -notice the patches of snow on the Ben Nevis range to the left. Also note the lack of other water craft on here today.
Nice full screen

Remembers me of the trip we made with our kids. We kept looking for Nessi but she probably was in that part of Loch Ness where we didn't go. We had similar conditions.

Very nice Herb'... illustrating well - the nature and atmosphere of these parts - it always surprises me how lakes can appear most beautiful and blue in calm sunny weather... then grim, choppy and murky when the clouds appear... Anyway.. a fine scene there.....

Hi David. Yes, I must agree with you that lakes can change from a mirror reflection pure blues or reds to a place of danger and discomfort, all depending on wind and light. Anyway, good that you enjoyed this scene all the same.

As I was younger I wanted to go there, but at the end I never went.

We can't get everywhere Dany. Many places in Italy that I would like love to visit but there is not enough time in my life to do that anymore. You can however, enjoy my views of this country through my photos as compensation.

Cheers, Herb

I know. There are so many places I would want to visit, others I would re-visit. Some with the time don't attract me any more, like the Loch Ness or Island and there are new ones. There are so many in Italy that I never visited, for example, even if I traveled a lot abroad. And to travel you need company and money :-)

Hello Herb a lovely shot from your trip along the Loch .. this looks to be taken just off the tiny village of Bunloit along the A82 and looking towards Fort Agustus ..

Ben Nevis some miles away from here but Creag Meagaidh ( pronounced meggy ) another of the Scottish hills i have climbed is down there somewhere in the mist :))

Best wishes ... Steve

Hi Steve, sorry for delay here - too many photos :) We were taking a short cruise on here and this was taken just beyond Urquhart Castle, so not very far from that village of Bunloit on the right at all. Must have been great to climb these Munroes and Corbetts around here. I often wish that I had had a chance to climb these upper reaches and get those fantastic high views but t was not to be. Cheers for the look-in. Herb

It is as I remember it from my Scholl days, 1968.
After the dances in Inverness My friend and me stayed all night by the lake , sleeping in the old Renault R8 with the tripod mounted at the outside, ready for . . . but Nessie was not at the rendez vous . . .
Wonderful picture

Ah their goes the voice of romance Jose, when people really did try to see The Loch Ness monster. It is little wonder that people photographed the slightest rouge wave, especially after a night of Scottish dancing and whisky's. I have actually driven along Loch Ness a number of times since my first time about 50 years ago. I might even have passed your car :)

Best Wishes, Herbert
