But not everyone knows that storks choose Alsace for its... its roofs.
These birds come to this region to nest, and choose to make their nests in church towers and on the roofs of houses.
After spending the winter in Africa, the white storks come to spend the warmer months in Europe, where they give birth to their young, who are ready from August to mid-September to embark on their first migration south with the adults.
Storks weigh between 3 and 4 kg, are about 1 m tall and have a wingspan of 1.60 m. They live on average between 20 and 30 years.
They live an average of 20 to 30 years.
The difference between male and female can be seen in the size of the specimen and its beak.
The nests that storks build are 1.20/1.40m large and weigh around 500kg, and these birds enlarge them every year.
After a month of hatching, 4 or 5 grey chicks are born; their beaks and legs turn from black to red within a year. Storks are carnivores.
The stork, a symbol of fertility, has become the symbol of Alsace.
The villages and towns along the Alsatian wine route are the destination of these birds.
