Comacchio is the most original and fascinating historical centre in the Po Delta Park.
A city of ancient origins, in the centre of extensive lagoons that were later partly reclaimed, it preserves intact its original appearance characterised by bridges and canals that cross the urban fabric.
Heir to the ancient Etruscan city of Spina, long disputed by the popes and emperors of Ferrara and Ravenna, Comacchio was founded at the dawn of the Middle Ages, when the initial settlement settled on a chain of small islands emerging in the mouth of the Po River. Fishing, valliculture, salt production were the source of its prosperity and also of its reversals, due to the conflicts that opposed it to Venice. After the Este period, during the dominion of the Papal State, the city was reborn, so much so that the most successful architectural and monumental interventions date back to the seventeenth-eighteenth century.
Now Comacchio is a lagoon city that enchants: it is gentle and genuine, endowed with a vitality that finds sap in the respect of its history and in the will to enhance it. A diffused brightness reminds us of its proximity to the sea, whose light fills the urban spaces, even more enhanced by the quiet surfaces of the canals.
