Skunk Cabbage is blooming (Symplocarpus foetidus)

Skunk Cabbage is blooming (Symplocarpus foetidus)
These mysterious ground dwellers don't need anything more than sun, even if there is still ice and snow on the ground.

I'm not sure I've ever seen these. Is it in a swamp?

Yes, this part of the Seven Ponds nature center is swamp. In the summer the entire area is covered with the huge leaves.

N’est-ce pas dès plantes carnivores ?

No, not this one, but flies will enter the hollow outer cover to feed on the nectar. During the summer months the plants consist of very large, light green leaves.

It is not carnivorous, neira-Dan. It rather serves as a warm shelter for bees. This plant starts blooming even in ice and snow and it produces its own heat so it can grow even in below freezing weather.
