Reed (Phragmites)

Reed (Phragmites)
Building material. Reed is actually grown on farms in northern Europe for the purpose of harvesting it for roofing that lasts 50 years, completely maintenance free. We are always trying to get rid of it. Did you know that the tubers are a potato substitute and very nourishing? Why could we not find a way to use the tubers for a type of snack, then we wouldn't have to use weedkiller or have to burn reed (Phragmites)?

Marie-claire Gallet, Aschi "Freestone", Ronald Losure have particularly liked this photo

I didn't know this, but I suppose I have seen the roofs made of it.

The largest farm I have seen in a video is actually in Austria, although there are no roofs in that country made of reed. I recently watched another documentary about a grower and producer of roofing material in northeastern Germany. Interesting in that was that reed can only be cut in winter with special harvest machines and in late February the cutting has to stop because of the first ground-breeding birds return from their winter rest and start building nests.
