Box turtle

Box turtle
My dog Asker Garip finds these and carries them around. If I didn't make him drop them, he would nibble off the edges of the carapace.

Doerthe, Josiane Dirickx, Ecobird, and 5 other people have particularly liked this photo

Odd looking creature to me Ronald, had you not said it was a turtle I might have thought it was hand carved

When these turtles feel threatened, the pull their head and legs into their shell and close some hinged flaps to protect themselves.

They dont like being carried high. If you can try not to pick them up higher than a couple of inches from the ground. Also keep them the right way up !

The hinging always fascinated me.

I imagine they also dislike being in someone's mouth.

I can finally understand why these turtles have that name.

They have a very good defense when they close their doors.
