*nods in agreement* Yeah, like you say, the problem is the upkeep. At the time one decides to embark on such folly, it seems reasonable. But a year later and so much effort to keep under control, I am sure the effort begins to flag and then...the ivy wins! Ugh. That's just like my fight with the ground squirrel and deer here. I used to keep a garden...for a little over a year I had flowers and pumpkins and herbs too. But the fencing I put up to keep out the animals couldn't keep the ground squirrels out. I fought them and fought them until I hated them. I finally gave up because I was angry every day but you know, the squirrels were just getting food and digging places for safety. We are just visitors here and who am I to get upset? So now I like the squirrels again and the deer can walk in the broken down garden and after years of no care (2014), I still get a beautiful display of poppies each spring through the beginning of summer, and there are a few other flowers too. Whether it's ivy we are fighting or squirrels...we have to be honest and realistic--as you have been, and I learned--that some things are out of our control and we need to accept it or don't do it! You are wise to say NO to ivy! :) And I am wise to say NO to another garden so I am happy with our wildlife again! :)
