The current membership levels (Guest, Basic, Club) resulted at the end of 2018 as a consensus from a broad public discussion (see corresponding Club News).They were in line with the demands of the majority of the paying members at that time. The respective functional scopes and limits were also debated and balanced in great detail. They were the best possible compromise between partly conflicting requirements.

As a result of this compromise, the number of free guest accounts has shrunk from 214,000 (2017) to currently 7,600 with a further downward trend. The costs for guest accounts have been reduced from 10,830 EUR per year (2017) to 790 EUR per year (2020). They will drop to less than 500 EUR by the end of 2021. The existence of free guest accounts was deemed essential in 2018 to compete with Flickr, Fotocommunity and others. With total annual costs for our website amounting to EUR 42,000 per year (expectation 2021), the remaining EUR 500 for guest accounts is no longer a noteworthy burden. In return, the guests provide us with about 500,000 pictures free of charge, some of them in excellent quality. This enriches ipernity's content and contributes to its attractiveness.

Implementing the agreed membership types into the existing ipernity software was a time-consuming process, involving several hundreds of programming hours. Although subsequent amendments would probably be much less time-consuming, they would still not be possible without any effort. Modification requests must be weighed up whether the financial benefit to be achieved is higher than the programming effort to be invested for this.

Of course, such a discussion is welcome at any time.

Je suis d'accord sur la nécessité pour les administrateurs de groupes de passer régulièrement pour accepter ou refuse des photos. Personnellement, quand une demande n'a pas été examinée au-delà d'une semaine je quitte le groupe estimant qu'il n'est plus actif. Il y a la possibilité de nommer un ou plusieurs autres administrateurs.
Il faudrait également que les membres qui proposent des photos dans des groupes s'informent un peu mieux sur les conditions définies par l'administrateur.
Sinon, merci à l'équipe pour son travail et sinon implication.

Regarding members suggesting photos in groups, I agree with you.
In the meantime, picture suggestions are linked to the homepage of the member who made the suggestion. This allows group administrators and /or moderators to see who in the group might be suggesting images that don't comply with the group rules, and to ask them to be more careful. The other option is to allow image selection - at least for a certain time - only by the administrator(s) of a group.

But you may be talking about those group members who do not comply with the groups' specifications with their own images.

Ich vermute einmal, dass die Diskussion über Gastkonten auf Missverständnissen beruht. Ein Gastkonto kann maximal 100 Fotos hochladen, von denen jedes maximal 2,5 MB haben kann. Es ist für Gäste also völlig unmmöglich, Ipernity als Cloud zu missbrauchen, weil die genannten Limits Ipernity als kostenlose Cloud völlig uninteressant machen. Durch den Wechsel von einem Standard- oder Basiskonto in den Gaststatus verliert man zudem eine Reihe weiterer Funktionen, siehe hier: www.ipernity.com/club

Ob nun ein(!) Foto eines Gastkontos auf der Frontpage erscheint oder nicht, dürfte kaum dafür ausschlaggebend sein, ob sich jemand für ein Gastkonto oder eine bezahlte Mitgliedschaft entscheidet. Das ist ein völlig untergeordnetes "Merkmal" und ich halte es für völlig fernliegend, dass auch nur ein Mitglied seine Entscheidung für oder gegen eine bezahlte Mitgliedschaft davon abhängig macht.

Bei den Bildern der Frontpage geht es nicht darum, einzelne Mitglieder zu belohnen oder die Bilder einzelner Mitglieder zu vermarkten. Die Frontpage dient als ein Schaufenster für externe Besucher, denen wir ipernity schmackhaft machen wollen. Deswegen brauchen wir für die Frontpage hochwertige Bilder, mit denen wir nach außen einen guten Eindruck hinterlassen. Wir wären aus meiner Sicht ziemlich blöd, wenn wir ein für diesen Zweck gut geeignetes Bild ablehnen würden, nur weil es von einem Gastmitglied ist.

Wie im offiziellen ima-Statement zu lesen ist, beträgt das Einsparpotenzial bei Löschung aller Gast-Accounts 500 EUR jährlich. Das sind 1,2 Prozent unserer Betriebskosten in Höhe von 42.000 EUR. Dem stehen 82 neue Club-Mitgliedschaften mit einem Beitragswert von 4.090 EUR gegenüber, die seit September 2019 (Einführung der Gast-Mitgliedschaften) aus dem Pool der (aktuell) 7.600 Gast-Accounts entstanden sind. Die Abschaffung der Gast-Accounts wäre finanziell kein Vorteil, sondern ein Nachteil.

Und es gibt es noch einen weiteren wichtigen Grund, die Gast-Mitgliedschaften beizubehalten. Beim Foto-Sharing haben nämlich alle wichtigen Player kostenlose Angebote im Portfolio. (Flickr 1000 Fotos / 500px: 7 Fotos pro Woche / Photobucket 250 Fotos / Fotocommunity 100 Fotos). Mit maximal 100 Fotos für unsere Gastmitglieder orientieren wir uns also an der untersten Grenze. Sie weiter abzusenken, würde unsere Wettbewerbssituation verschlechtern.

Another thought for me regarding guest accounts is that many members post photos to share with family. In order for those family members to make comments they need to have an account. I feel this is an important feature for our club.

Ich war den ganzen Tag unterwegs und kam leider erst abends gegen 21:20 Uhr zurück nach Hause. Daher konnte ich mich tagsüber nicht auf den Server einloggen, um das Problem zu eruieren.

Nachdem die in www.ipernity.com/blog/team/4735616 angekündigten Server-Wartungsarbeiten durch Amazon WebService abgeschlossen waren, startete der entsprechende Server neu. Leider startete aber der darauf laufende MySQL - Serverprozess nicht mit. Und ohne den ist unsere Webseite natürlich dann nicht erreichbar. Bzw. erreichbar schon (denn der Apache-Webserver lief ja), aber es konnte eben keine Anfrage an die Datenbank gestellt werden. Und da bei jedem Aufruf der Seite diverse Abfragen mit der Datenbank passieren, war nicht mehr so viel von der Seite zu sehen.

Nach einem manuell ausgeführten Neustart des MySQL - Prozesses auf dem von der heutigen Wartung betroffenen Serverinstanz war die Webseite dann gegen 22:10 Uhr erneut wieder erreichbar und scheint so weit wieder zu funktionieren.

Leider kann ich nicht ausschliessen, dass dieses Problem erneut auftritt, wenn die Server seitens Amazon neu gestartet werden... Aber wenn ich mir ein zukünftiges Szenario für einen Ausfall wünschen darf, dann bitte eines, wo lediglich ein Programm noch einmal neu gestartet werden muss. ;-)

So happy that it was resolved as quickly as it was. Everyone should have been aware of the server maintainance, so with computers, even when no down time is expected, we all should know it can happen easily.

Ich bin sehr froh darüber, dass es Dir gelungen ist, die Ursache zu finden und unsere Webseite wieder in Gang zu bringen. Das erspart uns die Kosten, die unsere externen Servicepartner dafür in Rechnung stellen würden, sowie eine längere Wartezeit. Denn unsere IT-Partner hätten sich frühestens heute morgens ab 9 Uhr um das Problem kümmern können.

Factual situation regarding the comment above from crisbou

1. In the Club News of June 28, 2018 the ima-team offered 'free users' (former term for 'Guests') to upgrade their account to a club account at half price. For details and terms, see: Retournee Offer. This offer was accepted by 151 free users/guests. It generated an additional contribution margin of 3,458 EUR in the first year, as well as additional publicly accessible content of more than 100,000 images, from which we all benefit. Permanent subscribers have been 60 former 'free users' (= 'Guests') who now pay the full membership contribution. This corresponds to a permanent membership contribution value of 2,994 EUR generated from the pool of 'Guests'.

2. It had been announced in the above-mentioned Club News that after October 1, 2018 the ipernity database would be cleansed of the invisible content of 'free users', i.e. uploads beyond the limit of 200 (that was in force at the time). This measure has brought our community cost savings of 7,200 EUR

3. At the same time, club memberships were started to be differentiated in October 2018. This was triggered by Flickr's announcement to abolish their 'grandfather memberships'. We stepped into this gap with our Basic memberships in order to gain a competitive advantage. In this context, the upload limit of Guests was halved to 100. The implementation could only be done after Rob joined the ima team. It started in May 2019 (see: 2019-04-19 Club News). The programming was very complex because the ipernity database had not been designed for such a differentiation. It was completed by the end of 2019.

4. Our worries of a mass downgrade have fortunately not been confirmed. At present, we only count 75 Basic members. This is significant because the Basic memberships only cover costs, i.e. they do not make a financial contribution to securing the future. On the other hand, they make a full contribution to the operating costs. Without these contribution margins, the Standard membership contributions would have to be increased by 75 x 29,90 EUR / 1150 =1,95 EUR per Standard membership and year.

5. The implementation of the Guest memberships was completed in August 2019:. Before we freed these accounts from remaining excess content, all those affected were again invited to upgrade. A free 2-month Basic subscription served as a loss leader. From this promotional offer a further 81 club members were recruited, 72 of whom became Standard members. Only 9 left it at Basic membership. This further recruitment from the pool of Guests was thus extraordinarily successful. It corresponds to an annual contribution value of 3,862 EUR.

6. In total, these two major actions generated an annual contribution value of 6,856 EUR from the pool of Guest accounts. (i.e. 141 full members generated form 'Guests'.)

7. On the other hand, the content of the remaining Guests was really rigorously cleaned up. This saved another 4,000 EUR in storage costs. In total, the savings from deleting no longer desired content from Guests amount to 11,200 EUR.

As already mentioned above, the remaining savings potential from Guests is only about 500 EUR by the end of 2021. On the other hand, there is still the pool of 7,600 Guests that we are still trying to reach. This includes, among other measures, treating them politely and well. This means that we do not delete their legitimate content as long as they are online within the time limits given by our Terms of Use..

However, given our limited resources within the ima team, we want to focus less on the guest issue this year but on the far more promising segment of quite new members. It is scheduled to start the intended advertising campaign in May, probably first in those countries where the covid lock-down is ending, so that we can benefit from the upcoming optimism this will bring.

Die Wichtigkeit der technischen Aspekte kann ich nur voll unterstreichen. Das Bravourstück, das Stefan und Rob gestern Nacht vollbracht haben, lässt hoffen.

Dennoch ist die Anwerbung neuer Mitglieder ebenso wichtig. Deshalb denke ich als Verantwortlicher für das "Marketing" darüber nach, dem ima-Team vorzuschlagen, zu Pfingsten 99 Basis-Accounts zum einmaligen Sonderpreis von 9,99 EUR "auf den Markt zu werfen" Sozusagen als -70% Pfingstangebot (für Neu-Abonnenenten im ersten Jahr, solange Vorrat reicht).

Man mag einwenden: "Spinnt der? Hat er uns nicht erst kürzlich vorgerechnet, dass ein Basis-Account erst ab 29,90 EUR kostendeckend ist?" Das ist korrekt - und dennoch kein Widerspruch. Weil unsere Betriebskosten nämlich schon über die laufenden Abonnements bezahlt sind, brächten 99 zusätzlichen Buchungen einmalig 990 EUR Cash in die Kasse. Wenn von den Buchern und Bucherinnen nach einem Jahr nur ein Dittel verängert, würde das immer noch 987 EUR laufende Beitragseinnahmen in den Folgejahren generieren.

Gier, Stolz und Neid sind die stärksten psychologischen Kaufanreize. Wenn irgendwo -50% oder -70% aufblitzt, werden Menschen sehr unruhig. Eine Mengenbegrenzung triggert zudem die Verlustangst an. Dennoch verdient die gesamte Geschäftswelt mit solchen Lockangeboten noch ordentlich Geld. Glaube ja keiner, dass man uns irgendetwas schenkt.

Ich persönlich halte es für unseren Verein für ertragsreicher, meine Energie in solche Maßnahmen zu stecken, als irgendwo die letzten Euros an Einsparungen zusammenzukratzen.

Ein solches Lock-Angebot finde ich besser als die Angebote wo irgendwie das Wort „Kostenlos“ drin vorkommt.

If administrators cannot find enough time in the long run to review proposals in a timely manner, I would like to recommend handing over the group to another member, or deleting the group for which time is lacking, because even more restraint to use the administration function to review proposals before posting them to groups would immensely increase the graveyard of neglected groups and overload the group GroupBusters - with foreseeable consequences - in the long run.

Doch, die Seite ist sicher. Lediglich die Übertragung findet teilweise auf ungesicherten http - Serververbindungen statt. Das ist aber im Regelfall kein Problem. Überall dort, wo eine gesicherte Verbindung zwischen den ipernity - Servern und deinem System erforderlich ist, wird sie auch genutzt. Beispielsweise, wenn es um das bezahlen von Clubkonten geht.
Für das Schreiben von Kommentaren wäre zwar auch eine gesicherte Serververbindung wünschenswert, ist aber kurzfristig aufgrund technischer Beschränkungen nicht möglich. Aber da dein Kommentar sowieso jeder nach dem absenden lesen kann, ist es kein Problem, wenn du ihn über eine nicht gesicherte Serververbindung übermittelst.

And if you go to your account pages and anywhere you are paying - those are all shown as "secure". Because they are. My browser shows this via the 'lock' icon a the front of the url line.

The wording of those warnings is simply wrong. Our website is as safe as ever. It's just not completely encrypted. However, the security-relevant parts in which personal data are transferred, as well as all payment operations, are definitely encrypted. You can convince yourself: www.ipernity.com/subscribe and www.ipernity.com/club.

Encrypting pictures, articles or comments that you want to publish anyway on the transmission path from user to server and/or back is pretty nonsensical. Nevertheless browsers consider this lack of encryption as a security gap, even if there is nothing to secure.

This problem is really irrelevant and has been known for a long time. Nevertheless, it is annoying. Because it is not possible to fix it in our old software. An upgrade require hundreds of thousands of lines of programme code to be revised. We can't manage it ourselves, because we are only photographers, not IT specialists. Various IT service providers we have contacted have refused to perform such a measure as far too expensive.

The only way out is a complete reprogramming of our website. Since there is no investor who will pay us for this, we have to accumulate the necessary money for it ourselves. Until we have gathered the necessary amount, we have to patiently live with the situation as it is.

Ja, Tanja - jetzt, wo du es sagst.
Aber vorhin lief noch nix. Jedenfalls nicht bei mir.

Hauptsache, es ist jetzt alles wieder heil. Ein Stück Lebensqualität ist zurückgekehrt. ☺

Teilweise scheint es wieder zu laufen, ja.
Es wird noch einige Stunden dauern, bis alle Server wieder wirklich syncron laufen. Und bis alles wieder funktioniert.
Zum einen hat sich in den letzten drei Tagen eine sehr lange Queue angesammelt, die abgearbeitet werden muss, zum anderen sind sehr viele Server betroffen gewesen, die alle einzeln repariert werden müssen - nach und nach.
Aber so grundsätzlich sieht das ja nach einer guten Problemlösung aus. Test - Kommentare, die ich gemacht habe, erscheinen nun nach und nach. Und ein Bild, was ich auf "Nur für mich sichtbar" umgestellt habe, ist nun tatsächlich nur noch für mich sichtbar.
Was aber noch nicht klappt, ist diese Sachen dann zu verändern. Also das Foto zum Beispiel wieder für alle sichtbar zu machen. Oder einen gemachten Kommentar nachträglich zu verändern. Ich denke, dass liegt daran, dass diese Befehle halt hinten in der Queue eingereiht werden und eben noch nicht dran sind.
Upload scheint auch noch nicht zu funktionieren. Ob die während der Problemzeit gemachten Uploads ebenso wie die Kommentare dann nach und nach erscheinen, wird sich wohl dann in den nächsten Stunden zeigen....

Ich vermute, dass es hilft, wenn nun nicht jeder alle möglichen Dinge ausprobiert, ob sie nun schon wieder funktionieren oder nicht.
Das führt dann lediglich dazu, dass die Server, die bereits wieder im Sync sind immer weiter Sachen an die Server weiter reichen, die ohnehin noch eine ellenlange Liste an Dingen abzuarbeiten haben.
Einige der übers Wochenende angestaute Warteschlangen sind, obwohl da pausenlos abgearbeitet wird, dadurch in der letzten Zeit eher länger als kürzer geworden.

Und einige Server werden noch lange zu tun haben, bis die nun ohnehin bereits angestauten Dinge abgearbeitet sind. Macht heute doch einfach mal was anderes und lasst sie sich erst einmal in Ruhe syncronisieren?
