Gene (Wilson) and Eunice (Levy) recorded their first single and the original and often covered "Ko Ko Mo (I Love You So)" (Wilson - Levy - Porter) in the basement studio of co-author Jake Porter in 1954. This reached number six on the R&B chart. The couple were later married. Within months it was recorded by The Crew Cuts, Louis Armstrong, Gary Crosby, The Charms, Andy Griffith, Red Sovine and Hawkshaw Hawkins among others.

Perry Como and the Ray Charles Singers had the big white cover hit of "Ko Ko Mo (I Love You So)" when it peaked at number two on Billboard in 1955. This was supposedly the first rock and roll issue on RCA Victor. It's no surprise that Perry didn't want to record the song as it certainly didn't fit his style.
