This is Brook Benton's original 1958 demo of "A Lover's Question" (Brook Benton - Jimmy T. Williams). Atlantic liked this arrangement so much they used the same musicians and the same bass singer for the hit, also on their label.
Clyde McPhatter's version of "A Lover's Question" peaked at number six pop and number one on the R&B charts. The bass is sung by Noah Hopkins. Clyde was an essential member of Billy Ward and His Dominoes and it was Clyde McPhatter who formed The Drifters. According to Wikipedia, singer Ruth Brown acknowledged in her later years that McPhatter was the actual father of her son Ronald born in 1954. Ron toured with his own group named after his father, Clyde McPhatter's Drifters.
