For four years now my work has focussed on the urban built environment, from Rome to Manchester, Switzerland to North Africa. I work in the photographic medium using digital techniques. Compositions are created from multiple images with the intention of conveying a sense of the area.
My work is about documenting how people use the environment and the marks they leave behind. I walk around the area I intend to photograph and try to capture the many elements: sounds, smells and visual rhythms present. I have never felt that any one shot alone will convey the complete reality of a scene.
Most cities and towns are full of history from the occupants who use it on a daily basis. It is obvious to say that urban spaces are places where people (through time) inhabit areas for a multitude of reasons, setting up visual communications (shop signs etc…) and physical structures (lamp posts, road signs and buildings etc...) creating the changing fabric of an urban community establishing their own patterns. Cities and towns for me are a collection of this visual evidence.
I enjoy photographing urban environments, combining the many layers – ‘discovering’ unusual fonts to create vibrant tones and unique photographic textures. I hope my work offers a fresh, and insightful perspective to the ‘everyman’ view of urban life - from graffiti to Gucci.
