Cave Castle

Cave Castle
Guess where have we been today?

---
Not exactly your run-off-the-mill castle...
Here's more info about it (worth reading if you have a minute)

View it large on black.

Predjamski

Predjamski
Every castle in the world is unique in some way. No two are the same.

But this one - even though it's rather small and humble compared to some - is unique in more than one way. Probably the only one in the world, really integrated in a cave system - actu…

Erazem's Cave

Erazem's Cave
This is the cave, which later became part of the castle and a last refuge, should the castle be captured. In front of the door is a small drawbridge, separating the cave from the rest of the castle.

Higher up this stairs (behind the camera), the cave nar…

Guard: Go and boil your bottom, son of a silly person! I blow my nose at you...
You and all your silly English knnn-igets!

Visitor: I command you ... to open the doors of this sacred castle, to which God Himself has guided us!

- How you English sa…

Dominating view

Dominating view
Usually unwanted guests to the castle were sent a message from afar.

If they just wouldn't get it - well there was still the shower...

Over the heather the wet wind blows
Lice in my tunic, and a cold in my nose
The rain comes falling out of the sky…

Entrance hall

Entrance hall
This is actually castle's interior - there's a wall on the left side of those walkways - but still half open upwards. Probably (very) uneven rock walls on the right side made it quite difficult to cover it completely with the roof - esp. with 16th century…

Hallway

Hallway
If your home is so merged with the rock surrounding it, that it's hard to tell when one ends and the other begin, a bit of mould or algae on the walls should probably be expected...

Hang in there buddy, we'll be right back...
... maybe in a day or five...

One of the darker sides of the castle - figuratively as well as literally. This "room" has no doors or windows. Nevertheless it's quite drafty, since there are large gaps between cave walls and castle roof. Still, almost…

Now for some stretching exercises...
Another cheerful detail from the torture chamber.

Stitched from two shots (since I don't have external flash, I had to flash it from two different angles)

Room with no view

Room with no view
... except maybe the view of your own early demise.

The "judge" is sitting in his cosy corner. No need for jury or witnesses, of course. Such unnecessary factors could only interfere with justice in a way his employer might find, um, troublesome...

The…

The ox, flinged from the castle was probably roasted here.

This fireplace sports an interesting clockwork mechanism for turning the roast (though it probably can't be used for an ox). I got no idea how old the mechanism is,…

Life in the Castle

Life in the Castle
There she weaves by night and day
A magic web with colours gay.
She has heard a whisper say,
A curse is on her if she stay
To look down to Camelot.
She knows not what the curse may be,
And so she weaveth steadily,
And little other care hath she,
The Lady…

Beyond the Infinite

Beyond the Infinite
When I entered this room and saw the walls panelled with wood in the same tone as the floor, lit with indirect light, it seemed like it was glowing from within. This, the near monochrome effect and the unusual sterile emptiness immediately reminded me of…
