Dormant but come spring when their glorious leaves come out they'll be known as "ghetto palms."

I sure didn't need to come all the way to Canada to see Ailanthus altissima yet here I was.

I have commissioned an artist to depict a stylized version of this scene for my proposed 21st century redesign of the obverse of the Great Seal of the City of Lansing.

Foreground McDonald's parking flowerbed, and ever-threatening encroachment of savage area beyond.
The pink flowers are pretty. I try to believe in earth-friendliness but the region of bunched-up greenery beyond the guardrail looks kind of gross. The dead trees impart a sickly feel to their vicinity. I keep catching whiffs of spoilage and old dried-…

Here was an overgrown parking lot, a collapsing fence, an unidentified source of toxic smoke, and a stand of Ailanthus altissima.

Unable to approach the distant stand of trees.
Perhaps the plantlife will eventually crunch up the pavement and devour the fence.

Interestingly, there is little or no difference between the pavement on this side of the fence and the pavement on that side of the fence.

Ghastly Tudor Revival architecture of downtown Urbana Illinois.
Believe me I won't need caution tape to keep me away! Unfortunately this was during a refurbishment project instead of an effort to remove the thing to an awful theme park someplace.

I do enjoy mocking people who want Tudor Revival, but the architecture…

Gang of young urban ailanthus, unwelcome fireworks display.
These China-native "tree of heaven" Ailanthus altissima are an Invasive Species of Noxious Weed, and they've been working for years and years on taking over the entire N. American continent, among other continents.

And phooey upon that AAA Triple-A motorists' club office over there too, I don't need it. I walked all the way down here and I'll walk all the way back. Unless a john decides to give me a lift. It's an attractive street w/ sidewalks on both sides.

Akron Ohio landscape, construction area plant show.
I am in Akron!, and it's a construction area. It shows the native plants, and I hope that the new bldg will be attractive, and that they'll keep the trees.

For one moment I felt like I was on a different continent such as Australia or Africa. But no I'…
