Hi Sue

Regarding your wasp nest. I don't know if you should be alarmed, but we have some 250 species of wasp in the UK, most of which are harmless. A few can be agressive such as the common European Wasp which make paper nests like the one in your photo. If the nest is damaged they will swarm sometimes with fatal results.

Mason wasps live in holes which they bore into brickwork but they are harmless to humans.

The most feared is the Hornet, a solitary rather large brightly coloured creature which has a very powerful and sometimes lethal sting. We have a few in our garden but they seem OK as long as they're not disturbed. They are ferocious predators of most insects. I have even seen them eat other wasps and bees.

I do not recognise the wasp in your picture, it may be harmless but it's best to treat the nest with caution. We leave our nests undisturbed. Wasps are great consumers of flies and unwanted garden bugs so there are benefits in having them around.

Most wasps are attracted to sweet food and drink and it's common to find them drowning in childrens lemonade during summer barbeques!

As for them crossing the Atlantic I've no idea. I am surprised that the US dosen't have them already; better to keep it that way !

Best wishes from rural England.
