This thread is for all newbies who want to know how to connect to the IRC network Freenode, join the channel (chatroom) #ipernity and talk to the attenders.

This turorial is based on the irc-client (program to use IRC) X-Chat(2) and thus useful for Windows as well as Linux user.

X-Chat2 is open-source and can be found on these sites:

Windows: http://www.silverex.org/download/
Linux: http://www.xchat.org/download/ (or in the repository of your distribution)

After the installation of X-Chat...
**********************************
(1.) You should see this window in foreground the first time you start X-Chat:

-Nick name is for the screen name you want to use in irc

-Second and third choice
are for combinations or alternatives that should be used if your nick name is already taken

-User and real name
are for certain services and identifying: use a constant choice but may not your civil name

Check "Skip network list on startup" to be not failed by this window the next time you start the program. If you need to change settings later you're able to reach this window over the program menu.

Select "Freenode" in the list "Networks" and press the "Edit..." button.

(2.) The following window should be seen:

Assume all settings from the picture and press "Close".

(3.) You should now be faced with this window again:

Press "Connect".

XChat should now connect with the network "Freenode" and join the channel (chatroom) "#ipernity" as adjusted prior. In the future you just have to start XChat2 and it will automatically join the ipernity chat.

The program interface should look like that for instance:

-top: the channel topic
-left: the network(s) and channel(s) you have joined
-right: a list of attending users in the current channel
-bottom: the command line awaiting your commands (prefixed with a / ) or messages

Have fun!
