The big picture on the frontpage is picked by the staff, I guess.
The little ones below appear on the frontpage because they "seamed to be interesting" because of the numbers of hits and comments in a defined time slot ... the next step is an entry in explore.

IMHO ... ;)

Actually it looks pretty automatic doesn't it ? kind of score calculation based on the number of votes, or a ratio visits / votes ? Sth like that I would say.

At least up to last week the small pictures were selected by the number of favs. 7+ faves in the first day, and you're picture was shown on the front page. And as far as I had figured it out they disappeared until they didn't got more faves on a regular daily basis.

I think it is still the same, but not for sure...

I think this is no more true.
This shot of mine had 7+ faves in the first day; it has now 13 (second day); more than a fave every 6 visits, but it isn't in the front page nor in what's hot.
I feel like a Flemish painter by Roberto Ballerini

EDIT: I've seen a sudden increase in visits and discovered it on what's hot
EDIT 2: and now it's on front page too

question :
Vinci had 20 + faves in the first day - he was and is as little picture on the front side, but not as a big one. So it seems that this step is only a manuell selection

hier ist die offizielle Antwort von lea

Hello Ingo,

You guessed right!

Photos displayed on ipernity frontpage are from a manual selection. Every couple of weeks (more or less), we look for new ones. This selection depends mainly on subject (Christmas time i.e) and picture's size (about 560x373 pixels).

We do not choose functions of Pro or not, member's popularity or something like that.

Btw, did you know that an iperMeeting is planned in Berlin soon (february, the 23th & 24th)? We'd like to come and it will be great to meat you there!

Have a good (ending of) day,

lea
