Sometimes I use uncolored structure gel (not this one like here) before I take the oil.

Sometimes self made pigments, red & yellow clay powder, soil made to powder in a coffe-mill or so, mixed with linnen oil. ash works, too. Sone-age colours , stone age technology at nil cost (next to nil)
linnen from flea market.
Vital only to stick to the earthen colours, iron-oxide reds & blacks, in order to achieve reasonable light-resistance. The "colourful" colours still want to be taken from the industry.
