Street Photography is not photographs of girls in mini-skirt taken with a tele-lens

Women are not objects ! And Street Photography is contact with people isn't it ?

Do the administrators of this group intend to stop this?

(I think I will quit this group soon, as I quit the Street Photography & People on the Street group.)

I agree, photographs taken with a telephoto lens are not typical street photography (with rather rare exceptions). And photographs of urban environment or photographs in streets or photographs of streets are not street photography automatically.

In my opinion it is difficult to judge 'real' street photography from 'not real' street photography. But as I said, I agree with the original poster of this thread that many photographs in this pool I would not regard as street photography.

...so, is there a chance that anyone of the moderators / administrators of this group make a statement?

I hope so. Otherwise, I will soon leave this group. I left the group Street Photography and People for the same reasons.

I'm thinking also to maybe create a new group named "Real Street Photography" and to administrate it myself (with other volonteers if possible). The rules would be something like: street, people, no backs, and no tele-lens. And I intend to systematically erase the pictures that do not conform to these rules.

Ulrich replies:
I'd say that this will be a difficult task. A rule such as 'no backs' for instance would close out some very good street photography...

Anyway a heavily moderated group might be the way to go... for instance by having a discussion thread for photos that are disputed. In such a thread such photos could be openly discussed and everyones opinion can be heard before a photograph is considered as valid and let into the pool...

I agree: it's a damn very good street photography ! But rules must be strict, and moderation/cleaning must be very flexible.

But I was not thinking at a heavily moderated group, but rather a heavily post-cleaned group. To clean the group once a day, and if someone is not happy with the cleaning, he can always post in the Discussions why he disagrees. Administrators and moderators would be very happy to explain there choice. It's always good to speak and explain about what is our goal and what is Real Street Photography.

I will wait one or two days, and without answer from the administrators of this group, I will start the new group. Are-you ok to help me to administer and clean the new group, if we go this way ? Is anybody else interested ?

I like the idea of REAL street photography.
as Ulrich said, heavily moderated group might be the way to go.

I just need a confirmation from two or tree members, if they want to be moderators

thx again for this discussion

I'd be happy to help as well.

But I still think, to move a questionable image somewhere instead of rigorously 'deleting' it might do a better job as from discussions all members can learn what typically is considered street photography in this group.

I mean: I am sure even a group of moderators will have different opinions of what can be kept and what should go...

I know it is a time consuming task but it might be a great result in the long run..

Done, both are moderators now.

next step, is it a good idea to change the open submission to moderate submission ?
I don't know if we can move the refused images to somewhere else ! maybe I shall write a small script to do that!! hrmmm I need to think little bit !

Ulrich replies:
Thank you. I thought about it: JP is right, to remove a photo without comment is the fastest.

Anyone who thinks a removed photo should be in the Street Photography pool can
- open a discussion thread,
- post the photo into the discussion thread and
- state why he thinks respective photo is a street photograph

Can we agree to this practice?

Rachel's Runway replies:
A resounding NO. My advice to anyone is DON'T bother submitting a banned photo for an explanation. if Ulric doesn't like it he doesn't like it. End of story. You won't get an intelligent appraisal. Trust me.

A homeless guy on his knees is not an object either, but no one seems to object to that photo. I disagree that women are not objects. Women, and men can certainly be objectified without the negative connotations associated with the term. I feel you are being very pretentious to make such a blanket statement about women, or even long lens photography. All photography is voyeuristic. A good street photo can happen with any camera or lens, and some of the best will depict women. God forbid if any of them happen to be attractive. If only they wouldn't dress that way to be seen in public. Get over yourself.
