Lila (199?-2012)

Lila (199?-2012)

She mysteriously appeared, cold and hungry, at our window one very cold winter day many years ago. She honored us by deciding to stay. In the early years, she was somewhat feral. I wouldn't have dared pick her up! I once saw her catch, decapitate and eat a mouse in what must have been less than a minute. She was a no-nonsense sort of cat. But she mellowed with age. Occasionally, she'd even leave a decapitated mouse head at the door for me.

She especially mellowed toward me after the night, years ago, when I opened the door to find her, frantic to get in, with a coyote about 3 feet behind. The coyote looked frightened at the sudden sight of me and froze. I stared it down. Lila was frozen at my feet. It finally backed off submissively and left. She became much more of an indoor house cat after that.

Her last year was filled with many trips to the veterinary clinic. At various times, we were told she was one of the nicest, easiest cats they worked with. The vet asked me near the end if she'd always been so sweet.

Our loving, sweet Lila died in my arms just after Christmas last year, her head resting in my hand.

She was a beautiful black cat - I'm glad she found you and I'm sorry for your loss of her. It sounds like for the most part she had a happy life with you.

Belated thanks, Fran. When she first appeared at our door, she looked as if she'd been living rough for a while. I'm sure she had a much better (and longer) life with us than she would've if she'd kept living the way she had been. One of the mysteries she came with was that she'd moved in and had been with us for several weeks, then suddenly disappeared. We were heartbroken. Then, as if nothing had ever happened, she reappeared at the door demanding dinner six months later. She never went off for an extended time away again. We suspect we might have been on a shortlist of houses she'd been auditioning, and she finally settled on us. Perhaps.

At the end, when it was obvious it was time for her to leave us for the last time, even the vet was wiping away tears and kissing her. She had quite a personality!
