It is a match!!

It is a match!!
The screen shot on the left is from a page in the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog administered by Allied whale I have volunteered there as a fluke matcher since 1988. In that time the catalog has grown from 500+ to 6000+ cataloged individuals.

Whenever I take a whale through the catalog to try and find a match I get caught on the photo in the screen shot, wondering what was happening: Is that a row boat? Was that Whale almost touching the stern! What was it like to be in that boat!!! After taking a minute or to to imagine what that was like I would go on matching.... but it would grab me every time.

There is a group on flickr where people can upload photos of humpback whale flukes they have seen on whale watch trips. We have become citizen scientists and helping the study of these wonderful animals.

Thanks to photo on the right of the same whale, AHWC#3025 taken in July of 2005 by Echo8, we know that 25 years later that this whale is still alive and well! Both photos were taken off Newfoundland.

A researcher at Allied whale who used to work for the group that sent in the 1980 photo wonders if it was entangled:

"As a past member of the Whale Research Group crew and knowing how they operate, it is possible that they were disentangling that humpback hence the close proximity to the flukes. Just a thought. Otherwise, it was a
curious whale!"

If it was then hooray for the Whale Research Group, giving this whale such a long and healthy life after disentangling it!
Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)
