The sky in human thought, always viewed with fear and awe - the place that held back deadly waters or could whimsically withhold the rain, the dwelling of the gods (including the malevolent ones) the place where the wolf ate the Sun, the place where the 'wild ride' took place from Halloween to Walpurgis, the place where aliens would come from; also a place to be aspired to with pyramids, ziggurats, towers, skyscrapers. Personally I like threatening skies like the one you have taken an excellent picture of, that looming cross is brilliantly placed!

I like those threatening skies too, for all reasons you mentionned plus an aesthetic one: I have a blue sky over 300 days per year...
I see religions as burdens, in my country it is the cross adepts who submited people and condamned freedom, so this association is an expression of my feelings... for me if there would be a god up there he could only be despaired with what men can do in his name...

I am a non christian in a country were almost everyone is christian and at least baptized (I am not). This photograph reflects my feelings, just read the answer above I made to John Sheldon...
I love the solstice, when I was young we used to try to be outside in that night and discuss about anything or everything under the stars... in communion with mother earth. Still do it in summer solstice (winter nights are too cold for me now that I am old!!!)
