EVEN IF IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE, THE SEA WAS QUITE ROUGH AND IT WAS VERY HARD TO FOCUS. I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO TAKE THE TELECONVERTER OFF BUT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE, NO INSIDE SHELTER TO DO IT SAFELY... SO THIS IS ALL I COULD GET, AND IN THE GROUP THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE SOMETHING ACCEPTABLE... AND MOST OF THE GROUP WAS SEASICK AND ... REALLY SICK!

Solche Fotos hat mein Sohn von Australien mitgebracht. Herrlich. In Norwegen haben wir einige Schweinswale gesehen aber mein Fotoapparat lag in der Hütte. ;-)

Indeed, but not easy, the little boat was really shaking, most of my companions seasick, not the right lens on... it was hard to perform! Obrigada Ulrich

We've been whale-watching many times and sympathize with those who were sick and with those who were trying to take photos. You did excellently!

Xata, stargazing... has replied to Ron Hanko
I was not sick (hey, I´m a former marine superintendant!) but had a hard time to focus, should have had the 300mm without the TC, but no conditions to change...

Agree - you got more of a whale than most. Unless they breech, this is about what anyone sees! Congratulations!

Xata, stargazing... has replied to rdhinmn
Well that comforts me a bit, the point is that with rough weather I couldnt take the TC of... with only the 300mm it would have been easier to get the right focus, I was too close of them for having the teleconverter 1.4 on...

You did indeed, I went to have a look at your pics... obrigada Aschi
By the way, what focal lenght did you use? I was with 300mm + TC 1.4, that results in 420mm (I am on full frame)

You did extremely well under the conditions! Which sort of boat did you take, one of the old wooden ones or the RIB boat? Humpbacks dive much faster than sperm whales which give clear signs when they are about to dive making it easier for photographers.
Xata, stargazing... has replied to Gudrun
The old wooden ones... and we were soaking wet afterwards, the suits were not in perfect conditions... and our stuff too because of the waves, they did not have a safe place to store things. I and not only me had to go to 66ºNorth buy some jackets...
Gudrun has replied to Xata, stargazing...
Oh dear, that sounds very uncomfortable! I'll keep this in mind, if I ever get to go on a whale watching tour I'll deck myself out in waterproofs and take a waterproof bag too. 66°North aren't exactly cheap...
10 days ago. Edited 10 days ago.
Xata, stargazing... has replied to Gudrun
But it is good stuff, kind of made to last years, not to go to the bin after being washed twice....

... a scene that dedicated whale watchers wait a lifetime to see ... and you made the most of it with some wonderful photographs ... 1/1000 froze the water droplets accentuating the feeling of motion ...

Xata, stargazing... has replied to L. L. Wall
The gear helped a lot... and not: the TC was too much, but the weather was so bad and no shelter to remove it from the 300mm...
