My grandma used to look at me that way ....

So -- just curious: When you shoot someone like that, and they know you took their picture, do you talk to them afterwards? Ask their permission? I'm asking because I always struggle with that (which is why I don't tend to shoot people close up.)

I struggle with the same issue, so it depends on circumstances. In Dubai I used to shoot with the cam pending around my neck and a long scarf hidding my right hand...and nobody noticed being shot. In here I talk to people most of the time and show them the picture, but afterwards otherwise they would pose, and it would not be a spontaneous expression. But sometimes not, if just passing by and had a shot of someone also passing by. It is a matter of feeling, not always easy to manage.
These kind of pics are generally taken with a Leica and at 28mm so I can crop to my will. Some others in events for example, are taken with a big telephoto, 300mm or else. Sometimes it allows to take people in everyday's life when they are not looking at the big gear!
Hope this is of any help to you.
