The Titan Atlas (From the Wiki)
Atlas led the Titans in the Titanomachy or war against the Olympians. When the Titans were defeated, Zeus condemned Atlas to carry the sky (to Uranus), very close to the garden of the Hesperides.
At first only the Hesperides nymphs were in charge of looking after the apples of gold, but Hera did not trust them so he sent Ladon, together they were the ones in charge of guarding the precious apples of gold; Atlas recalled the prophecy of Themis, threatened Perseus and advised him to leave. Then Perseus held the head of Medusa before the eyes of the Titan, and thus turned it into a huge stone that would be called Atlas mountain range. It was said of these mountains that they were so high that they touched the sky, although their trees were so dense that they prevented to raise them.
However, other accounts tell that Heracles, a descendant of Perseus, tricked Atlas into retrieving some golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides as part of his twelve works. Prometheus had advised him not to search for them himself, but to send them to Atlas. To achieve this, Heracles offered to hold the sky while Atlas went to look for them. But on his return, Atlas refused to accept the return of the heavens, and said that he himself would bring the apples to Eurystheus, the man who had asked for them. Heracles deceived him again, begging him to hold the sky for a moment to adjust his cloak.
