Changsha/China. November 2009 actor of soap operas and patriotic movies.
Comment from Tommaso Bonaventura:
“In China there are actors that specialize in impersonating Mao Zedong. They take advantage of a physical resemblance that is sometimes extraordinary, yet they spend several years studying the movements, the language, the calligraphy and the poetry written by the Great Steersman, trying to absorb as much as possible from his personality. This identification process goes into such depth that often it isn’t clear where the actor’s personality ends and the character’s begins.
Some actors specialise in playing the role of the young Mao, others act the part of the leader in his adulthood. It is possible to see them acting not only in historical films or on the occasion of a particular anniversary of the Party, but also in specific contexts, such as in Mao’s native village, where they perform on a daily basis in an auditorium built for the purpose.”
