Liang and her husband

01 Jan 2000 502
During my stay in Thailand for nearly thirty years, many maids from different provinces have been working for our household. We will forever remember Liang, a Khmer native. Beside her work as a maid, she was the best nanny to our children. After her stay in our house for many years, she got married now has two kids of her own. The contact will not break up, and its always a lovely reason to visit her house and village.

This was our home for our visits to this villagers. I was not the only western guest in this village. Sometimes, European agriculture experts come to advise people how to get a better harvest income, but they have many difficulties in transmitting modern sciences to these simple farmers who have been used to their own ways for many years.

All sorts of new and used, legal and illegally smuggled and stolen goods are sold on the border market. My thirst thought was that these shoes were collected for the Super First Lady Imelda Marcos in compensation for her lost 3,000 pairs of expensive shoes in the Malacañang Palace.

Indochina market in Mukdahan

01 Jan 2000 689
As most Thai cities along the Mekong, Mukdahan has an Indochina Market placed along its promenade, in front of the pier in this case. Unlike the other towns, here the market is enriched by the merchandise crossing the border in both ways. Thai fabrics (like pha khao ma), khit triangular pillows, hand-woven matmee and prae wa silk, Laotian coffee, Vietnamese souvenirs, Chinese, mass produced household products and Cambodian scarves rule here; rare are the Western products spotted here.
