Wee Breccia

Wee Breccia
I am sorting through the photos I took of the new crew today. In the meantime, I still have some photos from Thursday taken before I captured them. Here is wee Breccia. She weighs under two pounds and wasn't big enough to fire the trigger plate. Thankfully, the brother of our snaggle-mouthed buff entered the trap right behind her. However, Breccia wouldn't budge and let him reach the food, so even he didn't fire the trap. No, when I entered, the two were cornered in the trap by the farm dog. A dog that I disliked due to her aggression toward the cats actually helped me trap two of the felines. I simply reached down and fired the trigger plate with my finger. Then made the dog get back. I hated that the dog had them cornered, but at least I succeeded in trapping the pair.

Breccia's sister Beryl also didn't weigh enough to trigger a trap, so when she was distracted trying to reach the food from the outside of a trap, I managed to sneak up and grab her. Oh, she whipped her head around and grabbed me, too. Only she grabbed me by my pinky right over a joint. Ouch! But I wasn't going to let go. She wasn't either, so that worked. I slipped my hand into a carrier and, voila, I had Crystals second kitten. The only other kitten that appears to have survived the two weeks since I first visited the shed.

Aww! She has such a beautiful, happy face! I can imagine Beryl was learning quickly to survive and probably Breccia was doomed to a short life because of her friendliness. Now Breccia's friendliness with humans will make her easier to adopt and Beryl may be more of a challenge. Fortunately both are young enough that they should be easy to adapt to humans and they have a good chance.

It's interesting reading how you were able to catch/trap each of them. I'm glad you weren't severely injured by Beryl when you caught her. I once caught some kittens around this age by hand, but I wore gardening gloves so when they bit me I was uninjured.

I am wondering, how is Crystal doing?

She, thankfully, has recovered nicely from her post-op troubles. I just posted Crystal on facebook. She purrs readily, but Crystal does NOT want to be around other felines. Just ask Mr. Bill. He has a slash on his right temple from her. Crystal is protective of food, not wanting to share. She's showing that she is the dominant feline in the enclosed porch. Today I welcomed Mr. Cinnabar Bill, Jewel, and Opal into my home (Quincy's room). We're hoping that will improve Crystal's relationship with her kittens, but she had obviously already kicked them from the trough, so to speak, as she has no milk whatsoever. We'll see what happens. BTW, this wee Breccia already PLAYS! She's a blast to watch. Beryl still isn't sure about anything, but she will cuddle with us on our laps. She'll be won over in no time, I trust.

I'm glad she has recovered nicely - I was somewhat concerned when I read your description. Too bad she doesn't get along well with other cats, but it is understandable considering her previous circumstances and/or the fact that she is a cat! (They are all different, I think) I love watching kittens play - it must be a hoot to watch Breccia playing! I'm glad Beryl will cuddle already. That's a good start.

What a lot you Crystal's family has been through. When I popped in last week, you were about to go out and attempt to trap Crystal. It seems your prayers were answered. Bless you and all the kitties you help.

Poor little beauty. She must need nutritious food and treatment on the left eye.
Best wishes to you and all the cats.

dumb question, but can you get a squirrel size trap? That might work better for the babies.
