Salt Tram Pano

Salt Tram Pano
Four shot panorama. View LARGE!

Still standing proud and strong after all these years. I've read that the entire structure used to be covered in that corrugated metal.

This is the crossover station for the Saline Valley Salt Tram. Salt was mined in the very early 1900s in Saline Valley (to the left) and transported over the Inyo Mountains down to Owens Lake near Swansea (to the right), where it was transported by narrow gauge railway to Nevada. In total, 30,000 tons of salt was shipped until the operation was shut down in the early 1930s.

In its day, the Saline Valley Salt Tram was the steepest tramway in the USA. It rose from Saline Valley, elevation 1,100 feet, to the crossover station at elevation 8,500 feet, then dropped to 3,600 feet at Owens Valley.

Wonderful shot, Jim. Yes, IP is shutting down the end of January, but I'll not go back to the F place. Don't know at this point if I'll go anywhere, though I have opened an account at 23hq.

With all the Ipernity folk who are moving to 23hq I'll likely end up there.
